Making the Most of an Awkward Space
This landing was one of those spaces that had plenty of potential, but wasn’t particularly easy to furnish. The sloping ceiling, angled wall and limited floor space made it difficult to find something that would fit properly and make good use of the area.
Rather than trying to find a piece of furniture that would work around the space, we designed the unit specifically for it.
The finished piece gives the room a dedicated TV area, open shelving for books and decorative pieces, and cupboards underneath for keeping everything else neatly tucked away. The design was kept fairly simple with traditional shaker-style doors and a soft painted finish, so it works with the existing room rather than becoming too dominant.
One of the nice things about designing furniture from scratch is being able to make use of all those slightly awkward spaces in a home. The sloping ceiling that made this area difficult to furnish became part of the design, with the unit following the shape of the room and making the most of the available space.
It has completely changed what was previously an unused area into a practical part of the home, without making the landing feel crowded.
This is the sort of project we really enjoy at Perkwood — taking a space that isn’t quite straightforward and working out how to make it useful, while still keeping the finished piece in keeping with the home.
If you have an awkward alcove, sloping ceiling, unused wall or just a space you’re not quite sure what to do with, we’d be happy to have a look and see what we can come up with.
