Hidden Potential - The Story of One Under-stair Storage Project

How we transformed forgotten space into something beautiful, practical, and built to last.
There are certain spaces in a home that quietly disappear into the background. We pass them every day without giving them much thought, accepting them for what they have always been.
The space beneath the stairs is often one of them.
Sometimes it's hidden behind a plain wall. Sometimes it's a deep cupboard where things are placed with the best intentions, only to disappear into the darkness until they're needed months later. Vacuum cleaners lean awkwardly against sports bags, cleaning products compete for space with Christmas decorations, and finding one thing usually means moving three others first.
This home had exactly that challenge.
A lovely family in Sandymount Dublin had been living with a large, old-fashioned cupboard tucked beneath their staircase. While it offered plenty of volume, it offered very little organisation. The storage was accessed through the downstairs bathroom and, like so many traditional under stair cupboards, it had gradually become a place where everyday items simply disappeared into the back.
They already knew exactly what they wanted.
Not more storage, Better storage.
Something calm. Something elegant. Something that made the most of every inch while looking as though it had always belonged.
Before
From the hallway, there was little indication that an entire storage space was hidden behind this wall. Like many homes, the opportunity was there all along—it simply needed reimagining.
Looking beyond the obvious One of the things we love most about bespoke cabinetry is that it changes the way you look at a house.
Over time, you stop seeing walls and start seeing possibilities.
That awkward triangular void beneath the staircase isn't really awkward at all. It's simply waiting for someone to understand how it can work.
Every staircase is different. Every angle changes. Every home has its own personality. Designing bespoke under stair storage is less about fitting cabinets into a space and more about understanding how a family lives within it.
For this project, three pull-out units proved to be the perfect balance.
A generous storage chest.
A flexible shoe cabinet with adjustable shelving.
A tall pull-out designed to house everything from a vacuum cleaner to larger household essentials.
Instead of disappearing into the back of a deep cupboard, every item would come forward to meet you.
Simple.
Practical.
Beautifully organised
Where Every Project Begins

Every bespoke project starts here. This concept sketch helped bring the client's vision to life, allowing us to explore how three elegant pull-out cabinets could transform an awkward, underused space into practical, beautifully organised storage.
Every project begins with a plan. Not simply measurements, but understanding how the space will actually be used.
Would the family need somewhere for shoes?
Cleaning equipment?
Bulky household items?
Future flexibility?
Good design isn't just about creating storage.
It's about creating the right storage.
Every House Has Its Own Personality
However carefully you survey a home, it nearly always has a surprise waiting for you.
This one had several.
As we prepared to install the cabinetry, we discovered that the hallway wall wasn't plumb. It tilted and twisted enough that the new drawer fronts would never sit perfectly flush.
We could have hidden it.
Most people would never have noticed.
But we would.
Rather than compromise the finished result, we removed the wall, reset the timber framing, replaced the plasterboard, remade the joints, repainted everything and reinstated the existing trim before continuing with the installation.
Sometimes the best craftsmanship is the work no one will ever know happened.
The moment the wall came away, the hidden structure finally revealed itself.
Every staircase tells a slightly different story. It's only once the plasterboard is removed that you truly understand the opportunities—and the challenges—waiting behind it.

With the framework exposed, the available volume suddenly becomes obvious.
What appears from the hallway to be a modest wall is, in reality, an impressive amount of usable space simply waiting to be transformed.
The surprises weren't over.
Inside the downstairs bathroom, where the new shelved cupboard would replace the original entrance, the walls tapered away from one another like a trapezoid.
Our beautifully square cabinet suddenly found itself living inside a room that wasn't.
Rather than accept uneven gaps, we produced bespoke filler pieces that followed the walls perfectly. Once installed, caulked and painted, the transition disappeared completely.
Those tiny details rarely attract attention.
Which is precisely the goal.
The quiet details
The client had asked for a clean, minimal aesthetic without relying on push-to-open hardware.
While those systems can create wonderfully uncluttered cabinetry, they weren't convinced it was the right long-term solution for a busy family home.
Instead, we designed elegant recessed finger pulls that became part of the cabinetry itself.
No protruding handles.
No visual clutter. Just simple, understated lines that complemented the architecture of the hallway rather than competing with it.
By the time the final coat of paint had dried, the cabinetry blended so naturally with the surrounding walls and trim that it felt less like furniture and more like part of the house itself.
Exactly as it should.

Unfinished - The cabinetry begins to define the space, allowing you to see the transformation before paint, trim and finishing details bring everything together.
The Reveal
There is a moment on every project when weeks of planning suddenly become tangible.
What was once an empty cavity hidden behind a wall is now a carefully considered storage solution, with every compartment designed around the way this family lives. The pull-out cabinetry makes full use of the staircase's depth, bringing every shelf into view and eliminating the frustration of reaching into the back of a traditional cupboard.
It's a transformation that's both dramatic and surprisingly understated—exactly as good design should be.

The first glimpse of the finished under-stair storage. Three bespoke pull-out cabinets maximise every inch beneath the staircase while keeping everything easily accessible and beautifully organised.
Standing behind our work
Every project teaches you something.
For this one, it came after installation.
We had chosen premium undermount runners to keep the cabinetry looking as clean as possible. On the smaller units, they performed beautifully. On the taller pull-outs, however, we felt there was just a little more movement than we were willing to accept.
Our client hadn't raised a concern.
They may never have.
But we weren't completely happy.
So we contacted them ourselves, explained what we'd found and suggested a modification that would make the cabinets feel even more solid over the years to come.
They appreciated that the conversation came from us rather than having to raise it themselves.
For us, finishing a project isn't simply about packing away the tools.
It's the moment when we can't find another detail we'd like to improve—and when the client feels completely at home with the finished result.
Making the Most of Home
This project took around four weeks from the first sketches through manufacture and installation.
Along the way, we rebuilt walls, solved problems hidden inside the house, refined details most people would never notice, and even questioned a paint colour that looked completely different under the workshop lights than it did in the client's hallway. Thankfully, once everything came together, it was exactly as it should be.
After fourteen years working in design, that still hasn't lost its magic.
Watching an idea move from a sketchbook into someone's home never gets old. Long after the tools have been packed away and the dust sheets folded away, these cabinets will quietly become part of everyday life. Shoes will be tucked away after school. The vacuum cleaner will finally have a proper home. Bags, sports equipment and all the little things that make up family life will have somewhere to belong.
Perhaps that's what good bespoke cabinetry is really about.
Not simply building beautiful furniture, but helping people make the most of the home they already love.
