If you've never commissioned bespoke joinery before, it's completely normal to wonder what happens during the initial consultation. Will you need to have everything planned out? Should you already know exactly what you want? What happens after the visit?
At Perkwood, our consultation is simply the starting point of your project. It's an opportunity for us to understand your ideas, assess your space and discuss how custom-built cabinetry can work for your home and lifestyle. Whether you're considering fitted wardrobes, under-stair storage, a media wall, a new kitchen or another bespoke piece of furniture, our goal is to design something that fits your space perfectly and works exactly the way you need it to.
Every Project Starts With a Conversation
One of the first questions we're asked is, "Do you build this type of project?" or "How much would something like this cost?"
Because every cabinet we build is made from scratch, there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer. Unlike companies that install standard-sized cabinets, every Perkwood project is designed and manufactured specifically for your home. That means the size, layout, materials, finishes and features are all tailored to your requirements.
In order for us to have this conversation with you, we'll usually recommend arranging a face to face in home, consultation so we can properly understand your space and provide an informed quotation.
Do I Need to Prepare Anything?
You don't need detailed plans or technical drawings before we visit.
However, it can be incredibly helpful to spend a little time thinking about how you'd like the finished space to look and function. Saving inspiration photos, Pinterest ideas or images of projects you like gives us a better understanding of your style and helps guide the design process.
It's also worth thinking about how you'll use the furniture every day. The more we understand how the space needs to work, the better the final design will be.

Visiting Your Home
For most fitted joinery projects, we prefer to meet you at your home.
Seeing the space in person allows us to take accurate measurements, identify anything that could influence the design and discuss ideas while standing in the room itself.
For some freestanding furniture, a site visit may not be necessary if you already have accurate measurements or detailed drawings. We'll always advise you on the best approach depending on your project.
Measuring Your Space
Accurate measurements are one of the most important parts of the consultation.
We don't simply measure the height, width and depth of the space. We also record details such as:
Windows and window reveals
Radiators
Electrical sockets and switches
Door frames
Skirting boards
Any other architectural features that could affect the design
We also check the general level and squareness of the walls and surrounding area. These details allow us to design cabinetry that fits beautifully once installed.
During the initial consultation, we take the measurements needed to prepare an accurate quotation. Once your order has been confirmed and the deposit received, we'll return to take a second, much more detailed set of measurements before manufacturing begins.

Understanding How You Live
The consultation isn't just about measuring a room.
It's about understanding how you want to use it.
We'll discuss questions such as:
What are you hoping to achieve?
What style do you like?
What colours and finishes appeal to you?
Would you like integrated lighting?
What type of hardware would you prefer?
How do you expect to use the furniture every day?
These conversations help us create cabinetry that doesn't just look good—it works beautifully for your lifestyle too.
What Happens After the Consultation?
Once we've gathered all the information we need, we'll prepare a budget quotation for your project.
If you'd like to proceed, a 50% deposit secures your place in our production schedule. We then return to take our final detailed measurements before beginning the design process.
Every project is modelled in detail using 3D software, allowing us to produce accurate manufacturing drawings before any materials are ordered.
Before production begins, you'll have the opportunity to review and approve the design, giving you complete confidence that everything is exactly as expected.
Only once the design has been approved do we begin manufacturing your bespoke
cabinetry.

Is There Any Obligation?
No.
Our consultation is designed to help you explore your ideas, understand what's possible and receive an informed quotation. You're under no obligation to proceed.
Should you decide to move forward, we'll guide you through every stage of the project—from detailed design and manufacturing to installation.
